But, he's now too busy thinking about just how happy his friend--no, boyfriend seems right now. That's right...they were going steady and he was his boyfriend now...BOYFRIEND??!! Rei will eventually stop freaking out over every little thing that he comes to realize, but tonight he's been a mess. First he realized that he told Nagisa he liked him, then second he figured out that made him gay, and now he has a boyfriend. What a night. But strangely, instead of not being okay with any of those things, he's really relieved and happy--like he had repressed this for a while now and it was out in the open so it wasn't weird if he said certain things to Nagisa.
He probably had a lot more thoughts than just that during the few minutes Nagisa took to gather his clothes, and he probably was standing there looking like a mixture of confused and relieved whenever the other came back. ]
[ it's kind of funny, but this really answers more questions than it poses for Nagisa. sure, he had freaked out originally, because telling anyone your feelings is hard to do, and he's only ever really done it once. and that one time wasn't even legitimate, it was the Landlord fucking with him. maybe part of why he had been scared going into this whole day, and even before Rei had texted him (which had prompted to sort of semi-avoid Rei in the first place) is because he didn't want that to happen again. to just "wake up" at the stroke of midnight and realize this had all been a big joke and that something he's wanted to have be special for forever is now messed with, again. but he hadn't been lying when he'd told Rei his feelings had started well before all that. he doesn't know if it was day one, or after some certain point had taken place, or what, but he knew it was there and it was only a matter of how it would come out.
he still has his worries, but all the confusion and stress is gone. he's always known guys were a preference (certainly not necessarily an EXCLUSIVE preference, because dang, sometimes, girls tho), a notion only solidified by the fact that as a young and awkward budding pre-teen he had spent far too much time making googly eyes at Haru, also decidedly male. (even if he did blab at home "I'm going to marry Haruka-chan" where his sisters could hear it and they said "who's haruka, probably an UGLY GIRL"... that's not the point. he IS an ugly girl, which is why he's a boy. duh). so this just makes sense. he's had a lot of never-quite-made-it crushes since then so this is such a relieving breath of fresh air. Rei was easy for him to be around, to be himself around, since the day they became friends. what else do you really need??
when he comes back he's somehow managed to become even giddier, a respectable pair of jeans, a yellow button-up shirt, a black sweater vest (along with pink polkadotted socks and underwear poking out from under his arm, completely mismatched), and one of his nicer pairs of trainers all wadded up over his arm. under his other arm is his science textbook—he didn't make any effort to grab the others. he starts to hand the book over so he can stuff the clothes in his backpack but pauses, noting the look on Rei's face. ]

he still has his worries, but all the confusion and stress is gone. he's always known guys were a preference (certainly not necessarily an EXCLUSIVE preference, because dang, sometimes, girls tho), a notion only solidified by the fact that as a young and awkward budding pre-teen he had spent far too much time making googly eyes at Haru, also decidedly male. (even if he did blab at home "I'm going to marry Haruka-chan" where his sisters could hear it and they said "who's haruka, probably an UGLY GIRL"... that's not the point. he IS an ugly girl, which is why he's a boy. duh). so this just makes sense. he's had a lot of never-quite-made-it crushes since then so this is such a relieving breath of fresh air. Rei was easy for him to be around, to be himself around, since the day they became friends. what else do you really need??
when he comes back he's somehow managed to become even giddier, a respectable pair of jeans, a yellow button-up shirt, a black sweater vest (along with pink polkadotted socks and underwear poking out from under his arm, completely mismatched), and one of his nicer pairs of trainers all wadded up over his arm. under his other arm is his science textbook—he didn't make any effort to grab the others. he starts to hand the book over so he can stuff the clothes in his backpack but pauses, noting the look on Rei's face. ]

Though, he was a bit lost in his thoughts when Nagisa came up, that didn't mean he didn't notice and smile at him, not even noticing that he just grabbed only the science book. Of course he takes whatever Nagisa hands him, even if he decides to hand him the entire backpack, he'd take it. ]

Well, that's the idea! [ sometime he's going to have to point out that nobody says "going steady" under the age of 60, either. ] It has a nice ring to it, right? When we go out together, you can say, "Oh, have you met my boy~friend~, Nagisa-kun?"

Rei also thinks that everyone uses "going steady" since that is the proper term and he saw it in a game once (The Sims, probably, while his brother played or something.) ]
It does have a nice ring to it, oddly enough. Not to mention I felt that "friend" wasn't enough, since I could have said "best friend" but I'm not sure if anyone says that when introducing someone to another--- Huh--?! Do I really have to say it like that?! Boy~friend~ Nagisa-kun?? [ He's so unsure about that...and probably sounded really dorky when he said that. ]

[ he reaches out to take the science book back and crams it with ... a shocking amount of force into his bag, crushing his poor expensive clothes into the bottom until he manages to get it to fit on top and zip up all the way... and then hands the whole bag to Rei. :) carry my shit ]

Do I really have to say that to others--what if they laugh too?!?! [ He widened his eyes at the mention of that's how they're breaking the news to everyone. He decided to play along and tease back, but Nagisa would probably agree to it and this would be a huge mistake. ]
....Really? I'll just walk up to Makoto-senpai and Rin-senpai and say "Oh, hello, but excuse me for a moment, have you met my boy~friend~ Nagisa-kun?!"

That's perfect. They'll be so shocked! Maybe since it sounds so weird, it'll take away some of the focus off our totally unexpected relationship.
